Since my gun carry system has been locked for a while, I'm not putting much effort into finding the next gun I want to buy. But every now and then, a worthy innovation stands me up, grabs my attention and makes me think about reconsidering my transportation platform. The Sig P320 is one of them, and I was looking forward to getting another full size model to try.

I recently shot the P320 Carry model chambered in 9mm, which is the compact slide with a full-size grip. Shooting poses some fundamental challenges to my established habits that I find difficult. Especially considering some of the features this new Sig Sauer pistol has to offer. Here are my thoughts on the Sig P320 Carry after a few hundred rounds this month.

The P320 Carry and compact models are purpose-built concealed carry pistols. The relatively short length of the slide means they will work in any standard position for IWB carry: the 3-5 o'clock position or the appendage position. Unlike most of Sig Sauer's pistol line, the P320 is striker-fired. Like common sense for carrying a gun, it has no external safety or any other unnecessary external control.

Another reason to consider the P320 Compact or Carry is the modular chassis system. The serialized component is the chassis that moves within the non-serial frame, not the subframe. This means you can change the bezels to fit your hand (sm, md, lg), even go from full size to semi-compact size and even change from serialized bezel to .357, .40 to .45ACP without changing from serialized. bezel.. gun to another. I think this is a great system for a modern gun.

For the purpose of this review, I shot the Carry 9mm model, which has the compact slide and full-size grip. Almost identical to the compact model (only 2/10" difference in overall height). However, the Carry model gets 2 extra rounds in the magazine compared to the compact model.

The first thing I noticed is that even though the P320 is a percussion-fired weapon, it is set up like a hammer-fired pistol with a beaver tail and tall thick axle. Given this setup, I was worried that it would show excessive muzzle flash when shooting. Although there is more muzzle travel than stated on a similarly sized Glock 19 with the low caliber, I found the P320 to not be that bad.

The main difference from what I'm used to shooting here is that the grip angle on the P320 is more vertical than on a Glock. This is the typical Sig grip angle similar to the 1911. This meant that my well-drilled aiming point was turned under the correct position of the barrel, and it took me a few shots to remember to adjust my suppression to set the sights. Correct alignment. Once I did though, it was a nice experience shooting the P320, especially because of the excellent trigger.

Apex Tactical Sig P320 Flat Trigger

The grip of the P320 is very important. It feels a bit fat because the edges are more rounded than most handles. Even with a full grip, my average sized hand has no trouble getting a good position on the trigger. I found it quite comfortable. Of course, if you don't like the grip size, you can always replace the frame with a larger or smaller one at minimal expense.

There is a bit more muzzle rise than I find in most shot pistols, but I found it easy to control the recoil by resting my support hand thumb forward on the trigger lever. I had no problem firing multiple shots at multiple targets in quick succession, so there are no control issues with this gun. Capacity is as I expected with 17 round magazines for the carry model and 15 round magazines for the compact. It is interesting to note that the carry model handle is only 2/10” longer than the compact model, but you get an extra 2 rounds in the magazine.

The trigger on the P320 is definitely the best I have felt in any polymer, pulse fired pistol. If I could bring that kind of feel and movement to my pistols, I would do it in a heartbeat. I think some people will enjoy the lack of trigger safety that comes off the shoe and makes the trigger a more comfortable marriage with your toe pad.

The frame of the Sig P320 is excellent. Thanks to the modular chassis, you can change frames for grip size, color, model size and even chamberings without changing guns (serialized). Frames are available in three colors for about $46: black, plain dark earth, and OD green; and are available in small, medium and large sizes, each to suit your preferred grip size. For an armorer/repairer like myself, this is a great and compelling innovation. More stuff to play with! I note that the frame texture is quite soft, so like any other polymer pistol, it won't work if your hands are sweaty or bloody. Punctuation is required.

Sig Sauer Now Offers A Civilian Version Of The Us Military M18

The sights are iron, 3-dot night sights, and the rear has a nice flat front for easy purchase on one-handed slide racks. I found it easy enough to get them visually while shooting and switching to different targets.

The magazines are steel, have polymer baseplates, and are nicely made. They are released when thrown. They are interchangeable between the P320 and P250 of the same caliber and size. Unlike some steel clips, these don't put too much wear on your thumb when reloading. The external controls on the pistol seem well placed to me and the magazine can be released. The slide has notches and interesting contours on the front and back, and the frame's slide rail allows for a flashlight or laser. I like that the magazine has a cutout at the bottom of the handle for better purchase in the base plate; useful for malfunctions where the magazine tends to stick.

Although this is just a shooting review and I have not stripped the pistol in the field, the P320 can be easily and safely disassembled. Rotating the takedown lever allows disassembly without tools or trigger manipulation, which brings added safety for careless people. Internal parts include strike safety and disconnect safety.

The bezel of the P320 can be changed to be colored or to fit perfectly, and even from compact to full size and different calibers. The trigger is as good as it gets for a polymer, percussion pistol. Components work right out of the box and are must-haves and must-haves available here. You get two magazines with the pistol. For me, this is the only pistol I've come across that can distract me from my current everyday carry system.

Sig Sauer Gives Us A Look At Their Modular Handgun System Candidate

As a carry gun, the P320 is a bit wider than you might like. For comparison, the Glock is 1.18 inches wide, while the P320 is slightly wider at 1.4 inches, which may affect how you choose to carry it. The hammer-fire profile of this hammer-fire pistol gives it an extremely high frame axis and contributes to felt recoil and
